No Surprises Here: Slumdog Million Wins “Best Picture”

As expected, Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Million won the Academy Award for Best Picture, beating out The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Milk, Frost/Nixon, and The Reader.

Consider me unimpressed.

My excitement over the Oscars was over before it began this year. No Gran Torino? No Dark Knight? No Best Actor nod for Clint Eastwood? Hell, Let the Right One“, a movie several critics had in their end of the year top 10 lists, couldn’t even get a best foreign film nomination. (Apparently a 97% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t get you as far as it used to anymore.) So why bother watching the Awards when the Academy clearly has the hook up for some kickass pot?

The difference between last years Oscars and this years is night and day. Last year we were spoiled to four movies that actually deserved to be the movie of the year, minus Juno which was a horrible movie. Fast forward to the 2008 Oscars and instead of quality cinema you’ll see a bunch of movies who’s sole purpose seems to be baiting the Academy’s to consider the movie for awards.
