I don’t have a lot to add to this Freakanomics blog entry but I’m linking to it because you should read it. Go on…I’ll wait
It makes perfect sense that homosexual couples would travel, and spend money in, states that…you know, allow them to get married. (A point obvious to anyone not trying to fluoridate our precious bodily fluids) Economists Brad Sears and Lee Badgett estimate that allowing homosexuals to marry would “boost California state and local government revenues by over $63.8 million”. But as the aforementioned blog entry mentioned, thats just the tip of the iceberg. The financial boost to a state that legalizes gay marriage could result in billions of dollars in economic revenue. Sounds like a good idea for a state suffering from severe financial crisis.
So who knows, if promoting equality and freedom isn’t enough to chill the heart of those grumpy old Republicans, maybe the idea of preventing an inevitable tax increase to support their budget strapped state will persuade even the staunchest opponets to support gay marriages.
By the way. If you haven’t signed the “Vacation Pledge for Equal Marriage” stop what you’re doing and sign it now. Go ahead, I’ll wait…
