A few days ago I posted an article about the then unreleased “Supreme Court question” Katie Couric asked Sarah Palin. Here’s the video with the transcript below. Palin’s segment starts at around 2:05:
COURIC: What other Supreme Court decisions do you disagree with?
PALIN: Well, let’s see. There’s –of course –in the great history of America rulings there have been rulings, that’s never going to be absolute consensus by every American. And there are–those issues, again, like Roe v Wade where I believe are best held on a state level and addressed there. So you know–going through the history of America, there would be others but–
COURIC: Can you think of any?
PALIN: Well, I could think of–of any again, that could be best dealt with on a more local level. Maybe I would take issue with. But you know, as mayor, and then as governor and even as a Vice President, if I’m so privileged to serve, wouldn’t be in a position of changing those things but in supporting the law of the land as it reads today.
Its amazing how big the contrast is between Biden and Palin on this question. Senator Biden seems calm and in control of the facts. Like he actually has a…you know informed opinion on the subject. Palin, not so much.
She does a good job producing a coherent answer on Roe v Wade but the moment Couric asks about other Supreme Court cases Palin gets that “OH SHIT. I HAVE NO FUCKING CLUE” look on her face. Its priceless.
As far as the content of her Roe v Wade answer, it made no sense. You can’t support a right to privacy without supporting the ruling that guaranteed a right to privacy. That’s like saying I support equality, just not laws that guarantee equality. Oh wait.
But I think Ezra sums it up best:
We’ve left the realm where the failure rests with Sarah Palin’s experience or prep staff and entered the realm where her high school civics teacher should be fired, or dragged out of retirement and shamed.
For shame indeed
PS Props to Joe Biden for giving one of the best Roe v Wade answers I’ve heard
