Florida and Michigan: Democracy denied
Can someone please explain to me with a straight face why Florida voters should have half of their votes counted while Michigan, who also “broke the rules”, should have all of their votes counted? Or for that matter Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina who also broke the rules?
Also, if you’re going to take a hard line stance on the rules, shouldn’t Obama be punished for running ads in Florida? Saying “well it was a national ad” isn’t a justification for him breaking the pledge. The rules are the rules right? Obama didn’t HAVE to run national ads. None of the other candidates did. He knew he was running ads in Florida thus, if we’re going to be fair in our application of the rules, shouldn’t the Obama campaign be punished as well?
Speaking of fairness. Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina also violated DNC rules and moved their primaries to earlier on the calender. Why aren’t they being punished?
I’m also curious, since the Obama campaign have started arguing in favor of the will of the people, how does splitting the delegates in Florida and Michigan 50-50 represent the will of those voters? In Florida, all of the candidates had their name on the ballot and the overwhelming majority of voters favored Clinton. Why then should Barack Obama get an equal number of delegates when he didn’t get a vote total awarding him an equal amount of delegates? Also in Michigan, where Obama took his name off the ballot and conducted a covert campaign to have his supporters vote uncommitted, why should Obama recieve an equal number of delegates when he would not have received an equal amount of delegates even assuming that EVERY uncommitted voter was award to him?
Furthermore, how does splitting the delegates 50-50 express the will of the voters? Doesn’t splitting the delegates equal, thus making the state’s results a wash, deny the states’ voters their right to express their favor for one candidate over another?
